Video: Mishka Summer 2012 Collection
For this installment we headed to the Bay Area, enlisting Bloglin contributor and all around Мишка man Zachg to round up a who’s who in the rising San Francisco/Oakland scene. Five Reasons to Embrace Old Age with a Tech Smile
Sagging skin, weak eyesight and aging bones are not my primary concerns for old-age. I am more curious to know if technology advancements will match my expectations. However the reality is that, as we age from this present moment, we will always be in sync with technology and its latest developments. But will the stuff that we take for granted, like a walking stick, broom or pen, keep up with our future demands? Here is a lineup of five designs that hope to make our old-age as comfortable as possible. Let me know what you think of them…
Helping Handy Escalator by Kim Mi Yeon, Kang Seong-a, Kim Beom Jun & Kim Jun Sang
Given our grease-laden diet and sedentary lifestyle, it is safe to crown obesity and arthritis as our number one enemy. Helping Handy Escalator will be the one to help us get up and down short flight of stairs, something that we take for granted! This seat slides up and down a stair rail and features magnets that help it glide with ease.
Opticane by Shin Dong Jun & Kim Min Sun
Even if you decide to keep fit and walk to the nearest deli for your morning cuppa and pancakes, a simple walking stick will not suffice. Handy combos like the Opticane will be the way to go. A walking stick with a magnifier integrated, so that you can read the prices carefully in the menu card. Yes, pancakes cost $50-a-stack in the future, get over it!

Ok, so we digested the steep rise in the cost of living, but simple pleasures like doing the crossword still need to be addressed. GP Pen will be our extra pair of eyes they say. A convenient tool that combines a pen and a small magnifying glass! It means that readings glasses don’t have to be worn all the time.
Easy-to-use Bottle Cap by Jia Siyuan & Long Qi
Grabbing open a bottle of water ain’t gonna be easy for us old-bones! The prepared futuristic bottles will have bulbous, oval-shaped bottle caps, which are easily gripped by our weak hands. Sigh… do we really have to go through this?
Standing Broom by Poh Liang Hock
Coming from a background where the domestic help does chores like cleaning, the idea of picking a broom and doing it myself is quite painful! Sweeping the floors at the ripe age of 80 is kinda nightmarish for me! Standing Broom makes cleaning less arduous by minimising the cleaner’s need to bend down. Sounds like a promise, so it better be available in the future!
Standing Broom can stand up by itself via a folding action. The user applies downward pressure on the handle to fold the broom head, and then turns the handle clockwise to lock it in place. Unlocking the broom from its standing position involves turning the handle counter-clockwise on the block, and snapping the broom head back into its vertical position.
All the above projects are 2011 red dot design concept winners.

Nobis Packable Anorak Jacket for Spring 2012
The Packable Anorak jacket from Nobis is a nice addition to any wardrobe. Available in black, navy, tan and olive, the pipe detailing and industrial zippers make the jacket eye-catching. A few too many snap buttons for our taste, but the maximum weather resistant outer shell, interior and exterior stash pockets, and fully self-packable flap on the front make the jacket a functional dream.

Rugged Factory Spring/Summer 2012
The Spring/Summer 2012 collection from Japanese brand Rugged Factory features a bunch of colorful, playful and assorted apparel. Summer styles are offered in yellow cardigan, chino shorts and checkered plaids in matching shirt and short combo. Some dressy casuals make its way through printed shirts and powder blue blazer. RoboGames 2012 Report
According to RoboGames organizer David Caulkins, all the weapons or wedges in the world pale to operator talent. "It's driver, driver, driver, driver, driver. You can spend $60K on a weapon—it's been done—but it can't compare to a good operator."
Touro Middleweight bot from the Pontifico University of Rio de Janiero, led by professor Marco Meggiolaro. This year Marco's team benefitted from a short term membership to TechShop — enabling them for the first time to assemble the machines in a shop vs. their hotel rooms.
Teams have gathered from all over the globe this weekend in San Mateo, CA to compete in 50+ categories at the 9th annual RoboGames . Various theaters of combat are arrayed across Fiesta Hall at the San Mateo Convention Center (also the site of Maker Faire Bay Area), featuring a whole range of environments, like MechWars (armed humanoid robots shooting it out amidst a few highrises in some spare cityscape), Robot Soccer, and Sumo (a pushing match in a ring).
There’s also a nice array of ArtBots on display (try playing the computer-controlled foosball table game).
Of course, the center of attention is the Lexan-encased combat arena, a rugged see-through cage surrounded on three sides by packed bleachers, where the various weight classes of combat robots take each other on. Backstage, an unassuming looking announcer sits ringside, expertly chronicling every interaction. Next to him stands the black and white shirted ref (and RoboGames co-producer Simone Davalos), who manages both start and stop times, the logging of the match results, and overseeing the orange-clad safety crew. Three judges are crammed in there too, notepads in hand, evaluating machines for performance, ready to call a winner if the machines failed to complete a knock-out within the allotted three minutes.
And yes, the wedge is a dominant design, but at least 2/3rds of the combots have some very entertaining weapon design, blades generating sparks, wild noise, or other good machine drama.
The event itself is a great experience. Interesting to see the spectrum of the community, with its clearly welcoming entry-level categories (great for kids) through hardcore experts, with everyone—including Robogames rockstar, the Sewer Snake team—really accessible to the audience.
If you’re in the Bay Area, Robogames continues today through 7pm at the San Mateo County Events Center.
Like the giant walking humanoids of Japanese Manga cartoon, MechWarfare is a contest of humanoid robots fighting in a scaled down cityscape. Robots are human controlled, but the operator must use a camera mounted on the robot for vision - no direct viewing of the field by operators is allowed. Robots have impact sensors to detect how often they've been shot. (Great description from robogames.net!)
Everyone in this community loves the Sewer Snake, Team Plumb Crazy's heavyweight that apparently looks like its dancing as it flips about. This is actually the third iteration of this base design that Matt and Wendy have been running for 10 years now. The most recent mods were to make it a bit shorter and a bit wider, the addition of an on-board camera, and a flamethrower.
Orange and radio-clad safety crew manages all entry and exits of combatants. They also perform "unsticking" (e.g., freeing a machine when it catches on the metal guard rail)

Paulo Lenz produces RoboCore in Brazil — the equivalent to RoboGames here in the US. Unburdened by organizer duties, today he celebrated a match win for his pair of combat wedges

Saturdays Surf NYC Spring/Summer 2012 Lookbook
One wouldn’t notice just by taking at look at the latest lookbook form Saturdays Surf NYC for their Spring/Summer 2012 line, that this label is only 3 years old. What started out as as store on a cobblestone street in Soho has grown into a prime retailer in the surfing community. The season releases tees, plaid shirts, tanks, hoodies, denim and khakis, taking the traditional surfing style to another level by adding modern sophistication through prints and design. There may not be a lot of surfing going on in ‘The Big Apple’ but Saturdays Surf NYC apparel brings you closer to the surfing lifestyle where ever you are.

Kenzo x Vans 2012 Summer Collection
