Peggy Moffit: The Total Look

Peggy Moffitt: The Total Look

Friday, May 18, 2012

Still rocking her signature Vidal Sassoon five-point cut, Peggy Moffitt chats about being muse and model to designer Rudi Gernreich and her husband, photographer William Claxton, in director Phil Pinto’s new short filmed at Moffitt's colorful home in Los Angeles. Immortalized in Claxton’s 1964 photograph of her wearing Gernreich’s rule-smashing topless monokini bathing suit, Moffitt defined the look of the swinging 60s with her exaggerated dress sense, asymmetric bowl cut, and heavy, kabuki-inspired makeup. “Peggy is a true innovator, an extension of the pop art aesthetic,” says Museum of Contemporary Art Director Jeffrey Deitch. “She invented a new approach to modeling; she brought to it her background in modern dance, and her understanding of and connections to the art world.” The trio’s collaboration is celebrated in The Total Look exhibit at MOCA's Pacific Design Center, which closes this weekend. Curated by Cameron Silver and co-curated by Jhordan Dahl and Ethel Seno, the show features 55 head-to-toe ensembles by Gernreich, culled from Moffitt’s personal collection of 400 pieces, alongside Claxton’s era-epitomizing photos and his 1967 short Basic Black, starring Moffitt and widely considered to be the first fashion film.

Visit our Facebook page for an exclusive interview with Jeffrey Deitch about Peggy Moffitt's Total Look and 1960s idealism.

Maria Romero: Dulce de Reliquias

Maria Romero: Dulce de Reliquias

Saturday, May 12, 2012

The ethereal fabrics and designs of Maria Romero’s graduate fashion collection shimmer on the handmade dolls modeling them in her stop-motion short. Directed by Romero and produced in collaboration with fellow students at the San Francisco Academy of Art University in lieu of a traditional runway show, the film came from a conversation with the fashion school’s Director, Simon Ungless. “There was a doll’s body lying on the table,” Ungless recalls. “It was probably 12 inches tall and Maria was draping the body with fabrics and mini-garments she had made. I said, ‘why turn them into real clothes when you could do something new?’” The film was inspired by “dulces de reliquias,” Mexican candies handed out at Christmas during nativity plays. The golden maquettes in Romero’s short have heads of clay, hair from Peruvian lambs, and bodies wrapped in silk organza, chiffon, taffeta and tulle to mimic the texture of the traditional sweets. Among the guests who previewed Romera’s film at the graduation show were designer Sarah Burton of Alexander McQueen, milliner Philip Treacy, and journalists Cathy Horyn and Suzy Menkes—all good friends of Ungless. By the time the graduate ceremony was over, Burton, who studied under Ungless during his tenure at London’s Central Saint Martins in the 1990s, had offered Romero an internship.

Introducing Maria Romero

Hails from
Miramar, Mexico.

Favorite thing about San Francisco
Its diversity and passion for the arts.

Favorite fashion collections
Plato’s Atlantis by Alexander McQueen, spring 2010; and Gareth Pugh, fall 2009.

Dream outfit
Head-to-toe Valentino, fall 2012.

Fashion beginnings
Almost all the women in my family have been seamstresses at some point; I grew up watching them crochet, knit and embroider. Most exciting for me was watching my mom sew my aunt’s graduation gown, a simple heart-shaped black velvet bodice attached to a white organza skirt.

Fashion hero
The late Alexander McQueen––he was not afraid to show his vision. Everything he created was a piece of art.

Lesson learned
Simon taught me to trust my instinct and to never give up.

Shoe designer Robbie Fuller has said that it’s even stronger and more dynamic than previous models too, so that’s a plus. Look for these to drop at Foot Locker on May 24. Watches Inspired By The Glamour Of Classic Cars

Super-syncing smart watches are so hot right now, but Bradley Price is banking on the appeal of an entirely different kind of timepiece. The industrial designer (and avid auto enthusiast) launched Autodromo last November, and the company’s growing collection of driving watches is meant to evoke cloudless days hugging curves on Italian roadways with the wind blowing in your hair. No, they won’t remind you to pick up milk at the grocery store--but that’s also kind of the point.

“They’re emotional touchstones that remind you of driving, even when you are doing something mundane, like sitting in a meeting,” Price tells Co.Design. “The same can be said of aviation or diving watches. Most people are not pilots or deep-sea divers, yet they wear these watches because it speaks to their inner fantasies. For some of us, spirited motoring is just as potent a thrill as either of those more exotic pursuits.”

The only thing dying is the watch as commodity item. The watch as talisman object is thriving.

Price, who has previously worked on the award-winning HomeHero Fire Extinguisher and Skiff Reader, named the latest series Vallelunga after a particularly tough road circuit in Italy, and actually creating the chronographs came along with its own set of challenges. “The subdials and calendar wheel are in fixed locations, so you have to design the rest of the dial around those constraints and make the proportions work,” Price explains. While most mass-produced watches are made with an aesthetic eye to the face alone, Price approached his pieces with equal attention to all sides. “Our proprietary stainless steel case is a smooth, pebble-like form with flush caseback: no sharp edges that can dig into you, and no crevices where lint and stuff can collect. I think it looks just as good from the back as from the front,” he says. As an added bonus for easy upkeep, a small screwdriver can change the battery without the need for a specialized watchmaker tool.

Not quite sure if the look will suit? Print out the clever to-scale PDF on Autodromo’s Try One On page, cut out your favorite, and wrap it around your wrist. “You can even see how the watch will look under the cuff of your favorite shirts,” Price notes. And while chances are slim--sadly--that after you close up your laptop today you’ll pull on some leather gloves, slip into the front seat of a sweet roadster, and speed off for a super-stylish commute home, that needn’t stop you from making a fashion statement. “The ubiquity of technology in our lives has freed the wristwatch from its basic functional purpose, so it’s become a vessel for personal expression,” Price says. “Even very sophisticated watches, at the end of the day, are collected and worn for emotional reasons. People talk about the death of the wristwatch, but I’d say it’s alive and well. The only thing dying is the watch as commodity item. The watch as talisman object is thriving.”

Stuff Crush; 8.5.12

Homewares, eyewears, pocket-wears and eye-popping psychedelic-wears. It’s another eclectic week in stuff we crush…

Stuff Crush; 8.5.12

01

These key-hole bridged unisex sunglasses, now on sale, come in two very chic colours; black with green tinted lenses and brown with photochromic lenses. Having collaborated with French style gurus A.P.C, these on-trend glasses are handmade in Italy by L.G.R (Luca Gnecchi Ruscone).

02

This first came to our attention at the Stockholm Furniture Fair back in February. Created by Daniel Rybakken and Andreas Engesvik for Asplund, the tray acts as an artificial surface veiling the electrical components whilst the pale green and yellow hand-blown glasses, make for an instantly classic twist.

03

With more powerful precision-tuned drivers and dual passive bass radiators (nope, us neither) for bigger sound, this is just like the Jambox you know and love, but bigger and packing a little more punch with a stunningly clear sound at any volume. Available in graphite, white, and red.

$299.99

Stuff Crush; 8.5.12

04

Young designer Alex Gibson has a Tumblr called Bad Smelling Boy, flooded with his designs for t-shirts and sweaters – we’re just upset that his Cassette Playa-esque works are not yet in production.

£We Wish

05

Whether you stand for peace, love or temptation? Jonathan Adler has super slick objets d’art for all three. Although it must be said, we’re just loving the imposing 2-fingered peace hand at the moment. Jonathan – peace out!

£225.00

06

Having featured his 2010 World Cup football stickers – which he designed in a bid to raise money for the local hospital who helped his newly born daughter – Elliott Quince is back with a hand-illustrated wallchart for the Euros. An amusing and vibrant way of keeping up with the proceedings, and cheap as chips too.

£5.00

Stuff Crush; 8.5.12

07

This elegant object is not only damn fine to look at, it’s functional too. Designed primarily as a laptop desk, the shelf along the bottom doubles its usefulness in providing a small space to store reading materials.

£195.00

08

We introduced you to their shower curtains in an earlier Stuff Crush so it was only natural we’d be keeping an eye on the masculine whimsical objects from Izola. Made of 100% natural cotton, the O’Pioneers Handkerchief would look very dapper donned in the breast pocket of a suit (or maybe more our style) the back pocket of your jeans and is perfect for fusing form and functionality.

Set of three $40.00

09

Toronto based graphic designer, Tahir Mahmood‘s Mortar and Pestle collection is now available from a company who certainly know a thing or two about contemporary design; Caviar20. Made of Dalbergia Sissoo wood (native to the Indian Subcontinent, often referred to as “Indian Rosewood”) and shaped using the ancient technique of lathe turning, this collection comes in an array of vibrant colours and sizes to suit your kitchen. We particularly like Bhadon.

$160.00

Tell Me, Daphne

Tell Me, Daphne

Tuesday, May 8, 2012

Lauded patron of the arts and fashion world fixture Daphne Guinness discusses space travel and the transformative power of clothing with celebrated auctioneer Simon de Pury in part two of filmmaker Johnnie Shand Kydd’s double-bill feature. Known for her unrivaled couture sensibilities, Guinness is a recognized presence on the culture circuit. “I’m really a great admirer of Daphne, and even though she is so radical in her look, one forgets what her extraordinary heritage is,” explains Shand Kydd who has known Guinness personally for years. The daughter of brewery heir Jonathan Guinness, the 3rd Baron Moyne, and French artist Suzanne Lisney, Guinness was surrounded by creative talents from an early age. “Daphne’s mother was photographed by Man Ray with octopuses on her breasts, and Cecil Beaton, who photographed her grandmother Diana Mitford’s generation, was a great one for dressing people up in balloons and tinfoil,” says Shand Kydd, “so there’s a tradition of extraordinary outfits, and it comes very naturally to Daphne.” At a Christie’s auction next month, the fashion icon will sell select pieces from her personal wardrobe, including items from Balenciaga, Chanel, Alaïa and Alexander McQueen. All proceeds will go to the Isabella Blow Foundation, which supports young talent in art and fashion.
