Check Out the Crazy Camera Rigs Used to Shoot Hard Target

0hardtarget001.jpg

The 1993 Jean-Claude Van Damme vehicle Hard Target was director John Woo's first U.S. film. Woo, the acclaimed action director hailing from Hong Kong, was for the first time exposed to American production largesse: Six cameras where once he might have had two, and a variety of expensive, elaborate camera rigs well beyond the budget of your average HK flick.

In this little-seen spot produced by the L.A. Times, the Muscles from Brussels himself--in fine 1993 form and style--gives you a brief look at the unusual rigs used to "make the magic" on the set of Hard Target. (Who knew they had drone cameras back in '93?)

Tiny Characters in Everyday Life

iPhone Photography: Glen Orchy and Glen Etive, Scotalnd

A mobile phone is no longer used for just calling each other these days, and in this post the prove of what else you can do with it. For example, and maybe almost one of the key features these days: Photography. Julian Calverley, photographer from London, United Kingdom took these photos with his iPhone when he was on a winter trip to Glen Orchy and Glen Etive, in N.W. Scotland. All photos are passed through an app called Snapseed, before uploading. You can find much more examples on his Instagram feed, here.

Celebrities as Neoclassical Paintings

All In Proportion

Robert Mapplethorpe’s 1980s photography exhibitions caused national debate on arts funding due to their explicit and homoerotic subject matter, and although the artist died at the end of that decade his work continues to generate great interest and discussion. As Above, So Below brings together more than 40 of Mapplethorpe’s images, many rarely exhibited before, in a collection that offers a new way to look at his practice.

The exhibition title is derived from the ancient Greek concept of microcosm and macrocosm, which notes the repetition of patterns at all levels of the cosmos, from planetary to sub-atomic. Man is at the midpoint in the scale, looking both up at the bigger picture and down at the smaller systems, and from here we notice the prevalence of the golden ratio – a relationship of proportion seen in the natural world and often replicated by the great artists as an aesthetic ideal. This golden ratio, along with ideas of duality and symmetry, are found in the curated selection of images at OHWOW, Los Angeles; dive deeper into the complex theory at the gallery from 28 February to 29 March.

Drama King

There’s something both cinematic and theatrical about the work of photographer Jeff Wall, even in those of his images which are unstaged. The Canadian has a knack of finding the drama in any situation, and is a skilled practitioner at creating scenes with a strong narrative and just the right amount of plausible reality, often based on his own experiences.

Jeff Wall – Tableaux Pictures Photographs 1996–2013 is the first major photography exhibition at Amsterdam’s Stedelijk Museum since its re-opening a couple of years ago. The year 1996 is an important one for Wall as it marked the artist’s first output in black and white paper prints; since beginning his career in the the ’80s he had worked in colour transparencies backlit by fluorescent strips in lightboxes of the kind usually employed in advertising. Wall is also a pioneer in the field of large-scale photography, and the show occupies four exhibition spaces in the museum. Running from 1 March to 3 August.

Kevin Cooley’s ‘Controlled Burns’ Shows The Beauty Of Fire

Kevin Cooley - Controlled Burn

Controlled Burns is a series of imposing images by the American photographer Kevin Cooley. Consisting of large, swirling clouds of smoke, these photographs are as beautiful as they are dramatic.

For Cooley, these images serve as a metaphor for opposition. “Fire is a powerful natural force that we harness for greater good” he says, “it is the only Classical element that we can create on demand, yet when out of control it has the potential for grave destruction”. At the heart of this series lies a simple duality – we can create fire and yet fire brings destruction.

All That Glisters

Jason Larkin
Daniel and the Hunting Dogs,
Selby, Johannesburg, 2012

The South African city of Johannesburg was founded on the wealth that came flooding in from a gold rush beginning in 1886; the discovery of one of the world’s richest gold reefs had miners and the accompanying frontiersmen and woman quickly swelled the area’s tiny population to a size of over 100,000 inhabitants in less than 10 years. But the mines which employed so many and created the fortunes of a few left a terrible legacy. Six billion tonnes of waste from these mines was dumped outside the city’s poorer areas during their active lives, and it’s estimated that 400,000 people now live surrounded by the man-made mountains of waste.

Tales From the City of Gold is British photographer Jason Larkin’s study of life in these inhospitable and impoverished areas – harrowing and beautiful in equal measures. Larkin lived in Johannesburg for two years, during which time he ventured deep into the wastelands seeking the reality of life on the outskirts, part of a great metropolis but ultimately isolated by geography and socio-economic problems. The Kingsland Road branch of Flowers Gallery is exhibiting the collection until 29 March.

A Photographic History of London's Architecture Superimposed with Old Paintings of the Same Scene

LondonPhotos-Tower.jpg"St Martins in the Fields (1888) William Logsdail"

I stumbled across a historic mash-up of sorts while perusing Reddit the other day. Anytime there's a visually enticing chance to learn a bit about history without opening a musty book or sleeping through a monotoned narration, I'm sold. This series of photographs featuring modern-day London superimposed with old paintings depicting the same scene caught my eye, to say the least.
