W121/ W122 Wool Pendant Lamps by Claesson Koivisto Rune

A pendant lamp made of wool, that's the material explored by the trio at Claesson Koivisto Rune for Wastberg. A rare material not so often for lamps, the unique felt quality used is heavy gauge and therefore an efficient absorber- not of moisture, but of sound.

So hanging this lamp over the table doesn't just add light where you need it, but also improve the acoustic.

And the design? Think of them as Audrey Hepburn- glamorous.

(Technical: Dimmable pendant lamp. Warm white LED with glare-protecting shade and diffuser. The shade is made out of 100% natural, fully renewable and biodegradable materials. The heavy gauge material makes the lamp an efficient sound absorber.)

wood casting

castwood

Hilla Samia combines cast aluminum and wood to make these stunning hybrid designs. Aluminum seeps into every crevice, highlighting imperfections in the wood. I find the charred wood (from hot metal touching its surface) the most beautiful detail.

A wooden stool by Jorge de la Cruz

A wooden stool’, by Spanish designer Jorge de la Cruz, is a low stool, with a shape close to archetype in which the protagonist is its material, solid wood. This stool is made out of Sweden Pine Wood.

This work comes from the observation of the material, its values and the history of its fabrication. The piece has a hand finished that consists in brushing the wood with a metal wire brush to remove the soft part of the wood surface and remaining the wood grain that is harder. Applying a matt lacquer to protect the wood completes the process and also it gives more smoothness to the surface.

This brushed finish accentuates the grain wood drawing, its most representative element that comes from the rings of the tree.

The goal is taking to the maximum the expression of the material, this is why every edge is rounded, differing from the orthogonal edge of plastified boards of furniture that imitates wood.

The finish adds human value to the product and tell us about its production at a time when the knowledge about how objects are made is losing.

hemp chair by werner aisslinger

hemp

The hemp chair by Werner Aisslinger has been designed for a lightweight manufacturing process stemming from the car industry; the renewable raw materials hemp and kenaf are compressed with a water-based thermoset binder to form an eco-friendly, lightweight and yet strong composite. Unlike with classic reactive resins, this method releases no organic substances such as phenol or formaldehyde during the cross-linking process. The only by-product of the curing procedure is water.

bahir couch

couch

I love the alternative shape of this Bahir couch by Jörg Boner. The swooping form and low, reclined back makes it a more versatile couch for sitting, napping and spooning. Being 5'0, I never seem to fit well with any piece of furniture, and since I so often sit cross-legged or in a fetal position, this wide couch is more adaptive for my needs. Available at COR.

maritime and pontoon furniture

maritime

I mentioned the lovely Maritime chair last August, and the chair's designer Benjamin Hubert will present an upholstered version plus a coordinating dining table called Pontoon for Italian brand Casamania at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile this week. I'm blown away by the stunning color palette for the upholstered version and how nicely it captures the hues of the sea without being cliché.

Lily Chair by David Ross Design

David Ross of David Ross Design has sent us images of his latest project- The Lily Chair, a flexible plywood chair-table set.

Cramped dining tables and lonely TV dinners are a thing of the past with the latest innovation from David Ross Design. A metamorphic piece of furniture the Lily Chairs can provide varied amounts of seating and also encourage informal communal dining.

When stacked the Lily Chairs function as a single chair, they can then transform to become two separate chairs. By further division these become two Japanese style dining table/chair sets. This versatile ply-formed furniture is the latest creation of Glasgow-based designer David Ross.

Sempe w103 Pendant Lamp by Inga Sempé

Designer Inga Sempé have designed the colorful Sempe w103 Pendant Lamp for Swedish lighting company Wästberg.

A Sempé w103 pendant lamp can be a single hanging shade or a combination of shades. They can be attached on a long rail for linear combinations or on smaller rails, where they can be joined together like Meccano to create polygons. The rail structure is thin enough to avoid the feeling of a heavy, hanging structure, and the lines are also softened by the round shapes of the shades. These exist in 7 very different tones - bright, soft, clear, dark - and can be arranged in any color combination.

Just like the idea of many colorful balloons hanging around...

KITE Lounge chair by Shin Azumi for Fornasarig

For Italian furniture company Fornasarig, Shin Azumi has designed the KITE chair, a lounge chair that looks like a traditional box kite.

At first glance, this slender lounge appears to be too fragile to sit in. However, due to its masterly construction, the slim seat is able to support a significant weight in a comfortable and relaxed way.

The KITE chair is delicate and lightweight, while simultaneously retaining a strong structural beauty. Sitting on it, one fells embraced and like floating in the breeze.

Structure in solid beech wood; the seat has springs made with elastic webbing and could be covered in fabric and/or leather.

kraft paper lounger by molo design

Famed for their Paper Softwall which earned the permanent collection by the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, Molo Studio is expanding the collection by introducing a series of softseating, a continuation of the Paper softwall project.

Utilizing a honeycomb structure to fan open into stools, benches, and loungers, each softseating has magnetic end panels, allowing an element to connect to itself, forming a cylindrical stool or low table, or to connect to other elements of the same size in series, creating long winding benches and endless possibilities for seating topographies. The beauty of these pieces is that they are sculptural abstract forms, each made from a single material, that can be used creatively and interchangeably as seating or low tables.

Based in Vancouver, Canada, Molo Studio is a collaborative design and production studio led by Stephanie Forsythe, Todd MacAllen and Robert Pasut.
