Balloon Rooms

Balloon Rooms 650x520 Balloon Rooms
The simplest inventions can make life so much more interesting. What do you think when you hear the word “balloon”? I am sure we all remember back to a time in our childhood when we were inhaling the helium from balloons to make our voices squeaky. And we can not forget all of those new balloon animal pets that we got at the local fair, the circus, or at birthday parties for those who had parents cool enough to get a clown to show up.

But, how many of us could ever imagine using a balloon to fill up an entire room, transforming the look of it? I know I have seen some huge balloons in the past, but this really takes the grand prize. Penique Productions, an artist collective from Barcelona, Spain that was founded in the year 2007, using gigantic plastic balloons to completely change the look of any room.

Glass table top levitating with the help of balloons

Glass table top levitating with the help of balloons

Wow, wow. We loved Chris Duffy’s swing table and wolf shadow chair, but nothing prepared us for the cleverness of this table that looks like the table top is being lifted by helium balloons.

Shelter Awareness

The Life-Light is a unique directional system that includes inflatable balloons integrated on streetlights. During an emergency situation, the balloons inflate and guide people to the nearest shelter. It displays the most efficient route, thus speeding the navigation process.

  • Life-Light is automatically activated by the central service system when a disaster warning alert is activated.
  • The system inflates balloons around streetlight poles, which indicate evacuation information and allow people to take a precise and speedy route to a shelter.
  • It is installed on streetlights at intervals of fifty meters.
  • The light flashes on and off, and a sound alert is also incorporated.
  • The dual mode of communication allows the system to be understood by those with visual or hearing impairments.
  • The lack of complex language or lettering also allows foreigners to readily understand it.
  • The system’s battery is charged by the city’s electricity supply as well as by solar power, so even if the city’s power grid goes down, it can still function.
  • The system also uses smart technology; if a route is blocked by a collapsed building, for example, the system updates and leads people to the next closest shelter point.

Life-Light is a 2013 red dot award: design concept winner.

Memory Balloon Lights by John Moncrieff

Memory Balloon Lights by John Moncrieff

We like balloons. We like lights. Naturally we like these Memory Balloon lights by John Moncrieff. Designed by Boris Klimek, these are meant to evoke happy childhood memories. These also remind us of the glowing balloons by Kouichi Okamoto, with a key difference: no actual balloons are used in Klimek’s version. All you need to get one of these lights to billow up and illuminate your life is a standard bulb — fuss free.

20-foot balloon dinosaur at the Virginia Museum of Natural History

20-foot balloon dinosaur at the Virginia Museum of Natural History

That’s right, some wonderfully talented and imaginative people teamed up with school kids to make a twenty foot balloon Acrocanthosaurus for display at the Virginia Museum of Natural History. Using a real skeleton of the dinosaur as a guide, they tried to make it as realistic as possible. However, nobody really knows what their skin looked like, so for all we know, this dinosaur could have been tie-dye.

New York artist Jason Hackenwerth, known for his organic and biological forms made from latex balloons, just unveiled his latest work at the Edinburgh International Science Festival in the Grand Gallery of the National Museum of Scotland. Titled Pisces the sculpture is the artist’s interpretation of the legend of Aphrodite and Eros: in Greek mythology, Aphrodite, the Goddess of love and her son, Eros, escaped the fearsome monster Typhon by transforming into a tightly woven spiral of two fish, a figure which later became a constellation called Pisces. The spiraling form is made from 10,000 balloons which took three staff members nearly six days to blow up, after which Hackenwerth and his assistant Leah Blair wove carefully into this three dimensional structure. Pisces will be up through April 14th, 2013 and you can see much more of it on Flickr.

Romanian Teenager Puts Space Shuttle Back in Space

On January 5, 2012, Raul Oaida posted the following update to his blog:

On the 31st of December I launched the Black Sky project payload with two HD cameras. I recovered the rig ~240km away (320 km on the highway) in excellent condition from a hillin a remote area. I wasn’t able to use the NewTrent external battery for extra camera videotaping time so the 2:20 h video cuts out before the balloon burst at about 30-33km. I used a 1600g balloon with a SPOT GPS tracker for the recovery. I will submit a more detailed posted after the 16GB in flight video is edited and uploaded to youtube, the ”payload” was a LEGO space shuttle.

About a month later, he posted the embedded video to YouTube.  The entry on his blog from that date kinda says it all:

This was all done by me.

He had problems getting the necessary permits in his native Romania, so the launch took place in Germany.
